Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Sajjad Haider made the remarks at a weekly press briefing in Islamabad in response to a question about the resolution put forward by the United States and three European countries.
“Pakistan believes that Iran, as a signatory to the NPT, has the right to develop a peaceful nuclear program,” Haider said, adding that Islamabad would not comment further on the move by the four countries at the U.N. nuclear watchdog.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is intended solely for peaceful purposes and has rejected Western accusations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Haider separately rejected a Reuters report that Islamabad had sent a message to Tehran concerning developments in Yemen, saying the report was incorrect.
He also said a joint defense pact involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye was defensive in nature and that no decision had been made to admit any new member.
Haider said Pakistan supported stability and security in Yemen as well as international initiatives aimed at addressing developments there.
