Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran's Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, in a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont, the Security Council's rotating president for September, stated that the September 10, 2026 meeting on the so-called "1737 Committee activities" constitutes a blatant abuse of the Council's procedure and authority.
The letter emphasized that Resolution 2231 expired on October 18, 2025, and from that date, all provisions and restrictions related to the nuclear issue were permanently terminated. It also noted that the so-called "snapback" mechanism was never activated by the three European countries because they lacked the legal standing to do so.
Darzi identified the root cause of the current situation as the illegal attacks by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran's peaceful, safeguarded nuclear facilities, describing them as flagrant violations of the UN Charter and international law. He also emphasized that accusations against Iran's nuclear program are political in nature, noting that Iran has been a committed member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty since 1970 and has been under IAEA supervision for nearly 25 years.
The Deputy Permanent Representative concluded by calling for the Security Council's meetings and procedures not to be abused for advancing political accusations or providing political cover for illegal actions.
