Speaking at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Masoud Pezeshkian highlighted three key priorities for Iran within the group: strengthening political coordination among members in defense of the UN Charter and national sovereignty; expanding economic and financial cooperation independent of monopolistic instruments; and enhancing cooperation in science, technology, energy and food security.
He said the world today needs cooperation more than ever, stressing that multilateralism can only have meaning and credibility when all countries are equal before the law.
Pezeshkian also said that global governance can only enjoy legitimacy when the voices of developing countries are heard in international decision-making processes.
The Iranian president further stressed the need to resist against sanctions on BRICS members, reduce the group’s vulnerability to external pressures and developments, and transform areas of competition into opportunities for cooperation.
He also called for the establishment of a permanent BRICS secretariat and stronger coordination mechanisms among member states, saying such measures would enable joint decisions to be implemented with greater coherence, speed and efficiency.
Pezeshkian concluded by reaffirming Iran’s readiness to cooperate with other BRICS members within the framework of the group to advance these objectives.
BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) along with other members, including Iran as permanent member, seeks to establish a united front of emerging economy perspectives in multilateral institutions. The group aims both to push for reform of existing institutions, such as expanding the UN Security Council, and to form negotiating blocs within those institutions.
