Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi on Thursday that continued insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf was solely the result of U.S. military actions and interference in the region.

Araghchi and Motegi discussed bilateral relations between Tehran and Tokyo as well as regional and international developments during a telephone conversation, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said.

Araghchi outlined Iran’s position on the regional situation, saying security could only be restored through an end to Washington’s illegal and aggressive actions.

He also briefed Motegi on efforts by several mediators to advance diplomacy and stressed that the Islamic Republic remained determined to defend its interests.

Motegi, for his part, outlined Japan’s views on issues of mutual concern.
