Participants carried shrouds bearing the names of Palestinian children, in an effort to put individual identities to the tens of thousands of young victims reported killed during the conflict.
The initiative was organized by Mothers for Gaza, with hundreds of people spending recent weeks writing down the names of children to be commemorated. Organizers said the names represent only a portion of the victims, noting that many bodies remain buried beneath the rubble.
Irene Knight, one of the organizers, told Iran Press that recording the names had been a deeply emotional experience.
She said the initiative was intended to move beyond casualty figures by remembering each child as an individual with a family, siblings and a life of their own.
“People wrote in silence. People wrote in tears. People wrote in anger,” Knight said, describing the atmosphere during the name-writing initiative.
Protest Outside Holocaust Centre
The procession stopped outside the South African Jewish Museum and Holocaust Centre, where participants called on the institution to acknowledge atrocities committed against Palestinians in Gaza.
Knight said the group was challenging the museum over its silence regarding the situation in Gaza.
“They claim to stand for a just and caring society,” she said, arguing that such principles should apply universally and that the phrase “never again” should not be limited to any particular people or region.
The demonstration sought to draw attention to the scale of civilian suffering in Gaza and to commemorate children whose deaths, organizers said, risk being reduced to statistics.
Knight stressed that remembering the victims by name was intended to reaffirm their individual identities and the loss experienced by their families, while calling for the principle of “never again” to be applied universally.
