The Public Relations Office of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said a crude oil supertanker had caught fire in a massive blaze after striking a sea mine while attempting to leave the Strait of Hormuz through an unauthorized route.

According to a statement carried by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the vessel was navigating a designated high-risk area after attempting to exit the strategic waterway along a prohibited route.

The statement said the supertanker had switched off its navigation and positioning systems before the incident. Following the mine strike, the vessel was engulfed in a massive fire, which was visible to residents along the nearby coast.

The IRGC Navy warned that vessels disregarding the security requirements and regulations governing passage through the Strait of Hormuz would face serious consequences.

“Such a massive fire is the fate of any rogue oil tanker that seeks to disregard the security and laws of the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement said.
