Addressing the COP17 Summit in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian touched on the impact of military confrontations on human life.
Pezeshkian stressed that war does not target only human lives and infrastructure, but also destroys animal species, wetlands, and biodiversity, adding, "The effects of war on the environment persist for years, with lasting consequences for the security and well-being of future generations."
He further called on world nations to condemn the ecocide that recently took shape as a result of the American-Israeli-initiated war in the region.
"Protecting biodiversity will remain merely a matter of negotiation without financial support and access to knowledge and technology. Financial resources for biodiversity protection must be made available in line with the needs of developing countries," the Iranian president continued.
Pezeshkian also urged the international community to recognize that countries exposed to sanctions and war should not have to bear the costs alone.
