Prominent Nigerian Islamic scholar Zeenah Ibrahim has called on all the Muslim ummah across Africa to draw inspiration from the courage and steadfastness of Sayyeda Zainab (AS), saying the immense suffering she endured following the Karbala massacre did not deter her from continuing the mission of her brother, Imam Hussain (AS).

Speaking to Iran Press on the sidelines of celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Sayyeda Zainab (AS), which also coincided with the birth anniversary of Shaheed Ahmad Zakzaky, a young martyr killed during a peaceful Quds Day demonstration in 2014, the scholar described Sayyeda Zainab’s life as a powerful example of resilience, resistance and unwavering commitment to truth in the face of oppression.

Zeenah Ibrahim, who is described as the mother of martyrs, said the calamities Sayyeda Zainab endured following the tragedy of Karbala did not prevent her from continuing to convey the message of Imam Hussain (AS).

She recalled that Sayyeda Zainab suffered immense hardship, including thirst and the killing of her two sons, yet remained steadfast and continued to uphold her brother’s mission.

According to Ibrahim, the aggressors of that time massacred Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in an attempt to suppress the truth and undermine the principles of true Islam. However, she noted that the magnitude of the tragedy did not silence Sayyeda Zainab or prevent her from continuing her struggle.

“Throughout her life, she did not remain silent. She continued to speak to the people and called on them to stand against the oppression of aggressors. Therefore, her life provides a powerful example that we should emulate.

“Whatever situation we find ourselves in, we must stand up against imperialism and oppression. No matter what happens, we must not allow the persecution of oppressors to deter us from our mission,” she said.

She Attributes Yemen’s Ansarullah Resilience to Strong Faith in Allah

Turning to the resistance movement in Yemen, Ibrahim attributed Ansarullah’s resilience to its strong attachment to Allah Almighty, saying its members draw motivation from their faith and their desire to attain divine approval.

She commended the Ansarullah movement for maintaining its religious convictions and commitment to opposing oppression despite the world arrogance support to Saudi Arabia. “One thing that is very admirable about Yemen’s Ansarullah resistance is that its members are always invoking Allah and talking about the Hereafter. Their motivation is to attain the pleasure of Allah, and this is very important.

“Our struggle must be rooted in our relationship with Allah. We must strive because we want to please our Creator, Allah Almighty. He sent all the prophets to fight oppression and establish justice. Therefore, whatever struggle we engage in must be rooted in our devotion to Him,” she said.

The scholar described this spiritual commitment as a key factor behind Ansarullah’s resilience, adding that she had rarely witnessed such courage among a resistance movement.

She further observed that Ansarullah had gained broad support among Yemenis, including members of the armed forces, government officials, politicians and ordinary citizens, whom she said had united behind the movement in what she described as a struggle to liberate Yemen.

According to her, the movement’s reliance on Allah and the unity of its supporters remain central to its determination to continue its struggle despite the challenges it faces.

Ibrahim urged contemporary Muslim women and young people to uphold the values exemplified by Sayyeda Zainab (AS), particularly courage, perseverance, faith and the refusal to remain silent in the face of injustice.

She concluded that, just as Sayyeda Zainab continued to defend the message of Imam Hussain (AS) despite the tragedy of Karbala, contemporary generations should remain committed to truth, justice and the struggle against oppression.
