Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi in Baghdad on Saturday. The Iranian foreign minister was in the Iraqi capital to attend the 52nd Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
During the meeting, Araghchi thanked the Iraqi government and people for hosting the gathering and emphasized the need to make greater use of the OIC’s capacities to address issues facing the Muslim world, particularly the Palestinian cause and the Israeli regime’s expansionism and warmongering.
Highlighting the strong ties between the two neighboring Muslim countries, Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s determination to further strengthen relations with Iraq across areas of mutual interest.
The two sides also discussed the latest regional developments.
Outlining Iran’s positions on peace and stability in West Asia, Araghchi said the root causes of insecurity in the region were the Israeli regime’s occupation and expansionism.
He noted that, particularly over the past three years, the regime had carried out military aggression against Lebanon, Syria and Iran alongside its genocidal campaign in Palestine, putting regional and international peace and security at risk.
Araghchi emphasized Iran’s commitment to using diplomacy to prevent further escalation, adding that these actions had also jeopardized the security of international commercial shipping.
The meeting also addressed Saudi Arabia-Yemen hostilities, ways to help end the naval blockade of Yemen, and efforts to ease regional tensions.
