Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy says two supertankers carrying more than 4.5 million barrels of crude oil have exploded after striking naval mines while attempting to cross an unauthorized route south of the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the IRGC Navy’s public relations office said the two vessels attempted to pass through the southern part of the strategic waterway via an unauthorized route earlier in the day.

The statement said the tankers struck naval mines, triggering explosions and intense fires that disabled their engine rooms and left the vessels stranded.

According to the IRGC Navy, the two tankers were carrying a combined total of more than 4.5 million barrels of crude oil. Their crews subsequently abandoned the vessels, which were left along the southern coast of the Strait of Hormuz.
