At least 40 people were killed when gunmen attacked Binnari village in Nigeria’s northeastern Taraba State on Friday afternoon after prayers, Amnesty International said, as the country’s north continues to face violence by heavily armed criminal groups.

Police said in a statement on Saturday that a large group of gunmen stormed the village, opened fire and looted food supplies from local shops.

Amnesty said the death toll rose from the 10 fatalities initially confirmed by police after additional bodies were recovered later on Saturday. The rights group has called for an impartial investigation and urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen protection for rural communities.

The attack comes amid persistent insecurity across northern Nigeria, where armed criminal gangs known locally as bandits carry out village raids, abduct people for ransom and steal livestock.
