The funeral prayer was held at the Emir of Katsina’s Palace following Friday congregational prayers, drawing a large crowd of the cleric’s followers, Islamic scholars, religious leaders and members of the public.
The large turnout reflected widespread grief over the killing of the cleric, who was widely known for speaking out against extremism, religious intolerance, hatred and terrorism. He also worked to promote peaceful coexistence and understanding between Muslims and Christians.
People from various religious backgrounds and communities attended the ceremony, including Shi'a members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, highlighting the broad respect and support the cleric enjoyed during his lifetime.
Meanwhile, Ansaru, a Salafi-takfiri terrorist group that broke away from Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for the assassination. The cleric was killed alongside his companion on Monday night in Katsina State.
The killing has raised further concerns over the growing threat of extremist violence and religious intolerance in Nigeria.
