In a message on X following his visit to Lamerd to meet with the families of the victims, Baghaei described seeing the profound scars of the February 28, 2026 U.S. attack—not only on the city's walls and streets but deeply embedded in the souls of the grieving families. He noted that 20 Iranian citizens and one Afghan national were martyred in the strike.
Detailing the sheer brutality of the attack, the spokesperson explained that the victims were killed by the explosion of four Lockheed Martin cluster missiles, each packed with 180,000 fragments, which were tested over Lamerd for the first time. Furthermore, 180 residents were wounded. Six months on, several children and their families are still enduring severe disabilities and agonizing pain, with PrSM tungsten shrapnel still lodged inside the bodies of some children.
Baghaei emphasized that the tragedy inflicted upon the people of Lamerd must forever remain in the collective memory. He stressed that documenting the atrocities is not merely recording the past, but entrusting the truth to official records before the dust of distortion and oblivion can settle over it.
"We will gather these documents to demand justice and hold the perpetrators, instigators, and enablers of this crime accountable in international forums," Baghaei wrote, adding that these records will serve as proof of the cruelty of aggressors who claim to defend human rights but resort to any crime against humanity to compensate for their own defeats.
He concluded by stating that the wounds from such a horrific crime will never heal; they must be entrusted to memory, documentation, and justice. "This is a great scandal that will forever cast a shadow over the despicable fate of the perpetrators."
